Your Hair Prep Guide for the Perfect Boudoir Session

When it comes to getting ready for your boudoir experience, your hair plays a bigger role than you might think. It frames your face, sets the tone for your overall look, and helps you feel polished and confident in front of the camera.

The goal? Hair that feels like you — just elevated.

Here’s how to prep like a pro:

1. Don’t change your hairstyle the week of your session. I know it’s tempting. A fresh chop feels bold and exciting. But the week of your session is not the time for dramatic changes. We don’t want to memorialize a haircut (or bangs!) that you’re still unsure about.

Stick with what you know you love. Boudoir is about confidence, and confidence comes from feeling comfortable in your own skin — and your own hair.

2. DO schedule a color or root refresh at least two weeks prior. If you color your hair, plan your appointment about two weeks before your session. This gives your color time to settle and look natural, while still feeling fresh. It also leaves a little buffer in case anything needs adjusting.

Fresh color photographs beautifully — especially around the hairline and part, where regrowth can sometimes show more under studio lighting.

3. Want to elevate the experience? Add a moisturizing treatment and blowout. If you’re really looking to level up, treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment and professional blowout a day or two before your session. Hydrated hair reflects light better, feels softer, and holds styling more beautifully. Think of it as part of the pampering process. Boudoir isn’t just about photos — it’s about the experience.

4. Avoid heavy heat styling leading up to your session. In the week before your shoot, try to minimize heat tools if possible. Overuse can leave hair dry and harder to style. If you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant. Healthy hair = shinier, smoother results on camera.

5. Have curly hair or planning to use clip-in extensions? Let us know! If you wear your hair naturally curly or want to install clip-in extensions, please give us a heads up ahead of time. We want to make sure our hair and makeup team is fully prepared and has the right tools and timing to execute your vision flawlessly. Communication helps us create magic.

At the end of the day, your boudoir session is about celebrating you. Your hair doesn’t need to be drastically different — it just needs to feel intentional, healthy, and aligned with your personal style. When you walk into the studio feeling prepared and confident, it shows. And that’s what we’re really capturing.
